My Confession as a Struggling Night Owl

The clock currently reads - 5:24a.m.

Hi, my name is Susan and I am a recovering night owl - a struggling one at that.  A bad habit which began in middle school - I would indulge myself in taking naps after school and staying up late to finish homework.

Work life has definitely made it harder for my night owl ways to come out as early mornings require an early night's rest.

To help you understand the reasons for staying up, here is mine:

1. No distractions - During the night, no one will be calling you, texting you, or tapping on your bedroom door to chat.  It's amazing the amount of focus and work you can get done when your phone is calmly sitting on your desk with no new email notifications or social media updates.

2. It's quiet -  My biggest distraction comes from noise - music, over-hearing a conversation, whispering, you name it.  During my university days, all my studying/work would get done in the library vasement (vacuum+basement).  Night time, coincidentally, is also best time for this deathly silence.

3. Use time more efficiently - There is no greater form of pressure than seeing the night sky turn into the morning sky.  You are on a clock against the sun and time must be used as productively as possible.  #beatthesun

Being a night owl is obviously a lot easier to get away with when you're a student.  Work life almost guarantees that your night ends at 10p.m. - unless it's the weekend.  :)

I love technology!

So, this past month, I've literally been racking my brains trying to look for the song below.

I didn't know the lyrics or the artist. The only thing I could remember was the rock/techno beat and a general idea of how the chorus sounded. Unsuccessful at finding the song through the internet, I found SoundHound - an app that can find songs even through humming!

All I have to say is, what an awkward song to hum and I can't believe the app found it! Kudos to you, SoundHound.

Melancholia (film) - Review

So I just finished watching the film Melancholia and for some strange reason, I had a sudden urge to blog about what I thought. :)

Cast: Kirsten Dunst, Kiefer Sutherland, and Alexander Skarsgard


Summary: A jumbo planet that has been hiding behind the sun, called Melancholia, is expected to 'fly by' the earth without collision. However, there is a lingering fear by some that it will in fact impact Earth. The protagonist, Justine, suffers from depression. She does her best to put on a brave face for her wedding day, but we see early on how her illness puts a strain on her relationship with her husband, sister, and brother-in-law.


Review: Firstly, wow, what a treat for the eyes. Visually spectacular - beautiful setting, amazing art direction, great clothes, and not a bad looking cast. I liked how this film was not your average end-of-the-world-type movie.


What I thought was most interesting about this movie was the difference between the two sisters. The director emphasizes this by splitting the film into 2 parts - Part I: Justine and Part II: Claire.


As mentioned earlier, the protagonist, Justine, suffers from depression. In Part I: Justine, we get a glimpse into how her illness has affected her daily life: constant fatigue, her struggle to bathe on her own, and a lack of enjoyment from food. She relies heavily on her sister to support her in all these areas. However, in Part II: Claire, we now see a depressed Justine become the stronger character - remaining eerily calm for her sister and nephew, even in the face of their impending doom from Melancholia.


Side note: Was it just me or did the movie's use of music remind you of 2001: A Space Odyssey? Meh, just wondering.


The only thing that bothered me a little bit about this movie were the scenes in slow-motion. I mean, they were really really slow, it kind of drove me a little insane. But otherwise, a really beautiful film!

Things to carry around with you

I'm no Mary Poppins (remember that scene where she pulls all the items out from her bag?), but there are some items I have found helpful to carry around at all times.

1. Swiss army knife - scissors/knife/tweezers all-in-one!
2. Bandaids - Always helpful for that 'hurting' friend
3. A pen
4. Paper
5. Advil/Tylenol - pain can strike at any time!
6. Hand lotion - dry, so dry....
7. Water - thirstyyyy....

Something I read last week...

I randomly picked up a graphic novel at the library last week.

Guy Delisle, a French-Canadian animator gets invited to work in the capital city of North Korea, Pyongyang, for 2 months. He illustrates to us his experience and observations during that time.

I particularly enjoyed his drawing style and humour.
The last page of the book was my favourite.

First Time at PC Bang/First Post in Longgg Time

Wowww, so I began this blog thinking I would post regularly.

That was about 7 months ago.

My school's Internet somehow blocked my ability to access my blog which is why I haven't been able to post ANYTHING since my first month in Korea.

I'm at a PC bang right now for the first time right now which is why I'm able to access my blog for the first time in many months. Ok random story. As I came into the PC bang, I went up to the counter lady and asked 'Can I use the computer?' in Korean. She then cocked her head to one side, called her helper over, and gave me an uber strange look. Ah yes. This look I have received many times in Korea. The look of: You are a Waegook-in (foreigner). haha. So for all you curious little cookie monsters, I guess my Korean hasn't improved THAT much if people can still catch on that I'm a foreigner. haha awww shucks.

A quick update, my whole family visited a few weeks ago which was so ridiculously refreshing and much needed. I was feeling really really homesick at about the 6 month mark so they really did come in the nick of time. Ahhhh. I got a good dose of the Park family so I'm good to go for the next 4 months.
